六世纪早期在北魏宫廷中发展出一种造像风格，其特点是人物身形瘦削，衣袍厚重满遮，这件稀有的独立式佛造像即很好地表现了这一风格。弥勒佛在中国早期佛教中扮演了重要角色，人们认为这位菩萨（已觉悟的救世者）将在下个宇宙纪元成为佛教被毁灭又复兴后继续传法的未来佛。造像上刻有弥勒佛的名字，同时也指明委托造像的人是为夭折的儿子制作此像，希望儿子和其他亲人最终能在佛前重聚。

这件作品是我们称为成铺弥勒佛大祭坛的一个例子。弥勒佛是来世的教示佛。一旦我们毁灭了自己，佛法必须给带回到现象世界，届时，弥勒佛将从净土降到凡间，再次将佛法教授给全人类。这尊大祭坛描绘的就是弥勒佛降世时候的情景。铜像中，弥勒佛站立中间，作出施与和慈悲的手势。他周围环绕的是一圈音乐天神，在梵语称为飞天。此外还有众多侍者，包括菩萨、护法神和僧侣。这些铜鎏金祭坛造像的制作年代非常早，结构尤为复杂，我们博物馆是西方国家中唯一同时藏有两尊这类造像的地方。
