Panoramic View of New York Taken from the East River
Not on view
This view is typical of the long low-level panoramas made in American cities in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. Executed by the British artist Robert Havell, this print would have been appreciated by connoisseurs for its skillful translation of the effects of watercolor. Havell was one of a number of British printmakers working in America who produced high-quality prints for a discerning audience. They stand in contrast to the more inexpensive images produced in large numbers from about 1860 by commercial lithography houses such as Currier and Ives.
