Triumph of Diana; Design for the Cover of a Cup

Not on view
Diana, Roman goddess of the hunt, rides a chariot pulled by stags. She is preceded by a procession of huntresses with their dogs. Du Cerceau, best known for his antique-inspired architectural designs, intended this print as a model for the lid of a decorative cup. The circle at the center was left empty to indicate the location of the finial—the knob used to lift the lid. Several enamel covers after this design are known.
