Landscape with Double Flight of Steps

Jean Honoré Fragonard French

Not on view

In this near-symmetrical view of an imaginary garden, Fragonard once more mines his memories of the Italian peninsula. Angled stairs frame grottoes and fountains, while frayed and unkempt foliage suggests the passage of time. Diminutive figures in the foreground accentuate the grandeur of the setting and the power of nature.
