The Stubborn Donkey

Jean Claude Richard, Abbé de Saint-Non French
Jean Honoré Fragonard French

Not on view

The abbé de Saint-Non, Fragonard’s friend and patron, was an enthusiastic printmaker. He made this lively etching, based on a drawing by Fragonard, in 1762, the year after the two men returned from Italy. It was likely Saint-Non’s engagement with the technique that led Fragonard, shortly after this print was made, to create a series of etchings inspired by Italy.
