La Place, Beauvais
Joseph Pennell American
Not on view
Pennell, a Philadelphia-born Quaker, spent the first two decades of his career abroad, living primarily in London, where he became a close associate of Whistler. Here, he represents a market in the main square of Beauvais, northern France, with merchants and shoppers near rows of covered stalls. Behind the square are peaked-roofed buildings and the gothic cathedral. The artist printed about thirty-five proofs before destroying the plate.
