The Woolworth Building
Joseph Pennell American
Not on view
Pennell, a Philadelphia-born Quaker, spent the first two decades of his career abroad, living primarily in London, where he became a close associate of Whistler. Here, he emphasizes the vertical thrust of Cass Gilbert's Woolworth Building on lower Broadway in Manhattan, with traffic a blur at its base. The building opened in 1913, two years before this image was made, with artist printing about one hundred proofs.
