Pennell, a Philadelphia-born Quaker, spent the first two decades of his career abroad, living primarily in London, where he became a close associate of Whistler. Here, he focuses on St. Paul's Chapel on lower Broadway. Manhattan's tallest structure when it opened in 1766, the church is now dwarfed by office towers and apartment buildings. The artist printed about one hundred proofs.
