A later state, possibly the third, of Schiavone's print; two earlier states in the British Museum (W,1.36 and 1858,0417.1607) and a later state, poossibly the fourth in The Metropolitan Museum's Mariette Album (folio 16). The implements on the altar and the bird's wings, as well as the face of the child slug over the woman's shoulder at right have all been reworked.
The composition is based on a chiaroscuro woodcut (Bartsch XII.31.6) whose composition is variously attributed to Parmigianino or Salviati.
