The Pio Clementino museum was named after the two popes who oversaw its foundation, Clement XIV Ganganelli (1769-1774) and Pius VI Braschi (1775-1799).
The Hall of Animals was set up under Pope Pius VI with the intention of creating a 'stone zoo' of antique sculpture. A special focus was given to works representing ties to nature in the form of the chase or the hunt. Animals can be seen playfully interacting with one another or with the heroes and gods of the ancient world.
