Clements learned to etch from Stephen Parish during summer classes he taught on Cape Ann in 1883. After studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Clements continued at the Académie Julien in Paris, then painted oils and murals and made etchings over a long career. Winters during World War I were spent in Charleston, South Carolina where Clements and her life partner Ellen Hale contributed to that city's transformation into an artistic center. Inveterate travelers, they also explored Europe, Egypt and Algeria. This etching, with arab figures in long robes on a street running beside a large courtyard, responds to a scene witnessed on the artist's travels.
