Not on view
This color woodcut centered on pair of birds tending chicks in a nest appeared in the "Illustrated London Almanack" which was published by the "Illustrated London News" and included color images with seasonal themes printed by the London firm Leighton Brothers. The latter had been established by the artist and printer Charles Blair Leighton (1823–1855) and his brothers George Cargill Leighton (1826–1895) and Steven Leighton (1834-1920). Specializing in color wood engraving, they used many matrices to achieve subtle effects. As the main printer for the "Illustrated London News," George Leighton pioneered the introduction of the latter's popular color "Christmas Supplements."
