Old Washington Market, New York
Founded in 1812 as New York's primary site for the sale of wholesale vegetables, Washington Market was located between West and Washington (now Greenwich) Streets, north of Chambers. At its height from 1880 to 1912, it served over 500 vendors and thousands of horse-drawn wagons. In the 1960s local development forced the market to move to Hunts Point in the Bronx. This 1883 view shows the wooden exterior with high windows and telegraph poles along the street. The artist, Hughson Hawley, had moved to New York from England in 1879 to work for the theater producer James Steele MacKenzie, then designed backdrops for many American productions while also painting watercolors, drawing architectural renderings and creating illustrations for Harper's.
