Virgin and Child with Saints Dominique and Thérèse, with vignettes featuring scenes from the life of Christ (recto); Sketches of religious scenes (verso)

1776
Not on view
In this rare example of a religious subject, two saints kneel at the feet of the Virgin and Child. Lining three sides of the border are small roundels featuring episodes from the life of Christ, each labeled by Saint-Aubin in his distinctive tiny script.

The function of the sheet is unclear. Was it copied after a work by another artist, perhaps a painting on view in an exhibition or a sale? Or is it a design for a print for a book illustration? The lightly drawn grid over the surface of the paper—a technique used for the transfer of designs—would argue for the latter.
