Frenchmen in November

Artist and publisher Thomas Rowlandson British

Not on view

Seven volatile Frenchmen are unaffected by the gloom of the season. A fat monk sits in an armchair eating and drinking, an abbé sits and plays the fiddle and beats time with his foot, a foppish military officer takes snuff and looks at himself in a mirror, on the left a fashionably dressed man gesticulates cheerfully and personifies "The statesman in a deep philosophic trance." On the right of the monk a man caresses a dog, next to him a huntsman wears jack boots and blows a horn, on the extreme right a man dances a pas seul and raises his hat. All are characters in the ancien regime.
