Statue Group with Two Prostrate Men
Middle Kingdom
Not on view
This object is not part of The Met collection. It was in the Museum for a special exhibition and has been returned to the lender.
Depicted here are two seemingly unrelated men, the governor Hor(em)- hatankh (left) and the governor Nakhthor the elder (right), as they perform the ritual "kissing the earth" before an image of a deity or the king. Their names are inscribed in front of their faces on the base of the statue. A third figure and inscription placed between them was intentionally removed, probably because the individual had fallen from favor.
