Portrait of a Neapolitan Woman
Jean Honoré Fragonard French
Not on view
In his youth, Fragonard had visited Naples and studiously copied famous paintings in the local churches. Returning as a mature artist in 1774, he focused on the people in the streets. Although the identity of this young woman in picturesque dress has been lost, the immediacy of the drawing is undiminished. Her features are built up through layers of pale brown wash, and she engages the viewer with the directness of her gaze.
