While the composition generally recalls the style of Parmigianino the figure of the lame man is derived from an engraving of the same subject by Giulio Bonasone after Perino del Vaga (B.XV.130.73). This is an impression of a later, possibly third, state, after the addition of Schiavone's monogram. For an example of an earlier state, possibly the first, see The Metropolitan Museum Mariette Album (folio 24). Two impressions in the British Museum (W,1.77 and 1858,0417.1609) while still unsigned, show traces of the spotty damage to the plate and therefore may represent intermediary stages between the Mariette print and the present impression
