The Source

Jean Honoré Fragonard French

Not on view

Fragonard’s mastery of the technique of drawing in brown wash is evident in this work, but its subject eludes identification. A muscular river god sits perched atop a mountain, alongside an overturned jar representing the source of a river. A group of at least four men bearing torches have just arrived at the summit, and they gaze in shock in the direction of the river god’s gesture. The cause of their amazement is frustratingly out of view.
