This etching reproduces the outlines of Ward's "The Liboya Serpent Seizing His Prey," a heroic struggle between a black man on horseback and a boa constrictor. Ward had first exhibited his painting in 1806 at the British Institution in London. When it came to America, the painting was shown in Philadelphia at an exhibition gallery established in 1819 by the painter Thomas Sully and James Earle, a framer and gilder. The gallery continued to operate until 1846.
