Victory Banquet for Meritorious Officers and Soldiers

The Qianlong Emperor’s (r. 1735–96) victories in East Turkestan were celebrated with a ritual banquet for officers and soldiers who had distinguished themselves in action. Here, the emperor, the largest figure in the foreground, is carried in a palanquin in a procession moving toward an enormous tent in front of the Hall of Purple Splendor. The defeated rebels kneel on the left. In the upper right corner are the White Pagoda and Marble Bridge, two landmarks of Beijing.
This impression was printed in Paris and sent to Beijing, where it was inscribed in brush and ink with a poem by the emperor and stamped with two imperial seals.
