Wenzel Hollar was a prolific etcher of the world around him. He was hired by the Earl of Arundel to reproduce his art collection in print. This wonderful set of butterfiels and other insects may be based on colored drawings in Arundel's collection along with actual specimens that, like many collectors at the time, he might have owned. Hollar made drawings while in England and then published the etchings when he lived in Antwerp in the 1640s.
