By the end of the sixteenth century, Armenians were the preeminent merchants of Europe and Asia. This book of regional clothing styles links dress and identity. The texts that accompany the images of Armenian merchants shown here note the unique Christian identity of Armenia and the prominent role of Armenians as textile merchants. These descriptions reinforced the perception of Armenians as wealthy merchants who controlled an important industry in the sixteenth century.
