Textile Fragment

Not on view

Although the cellulosic nature of plant fibers makes dyeing difficult, blue dye obtained from indigo was used successfully by various cultures worldwide. The darker threads on this textile were probably dipped several times into a vat with indigo dye. The threads used for the lighter stripes show evidence of a very small amount of indigo, suggesting a single dip in an indigo vat.
