메두사의 머리를 들고 있는 페르세우스
1797년과 1801년 사이, 카노바는 바티칸 박물관에 있는 2세기 로마 벨베데레의 아폴로를 기반으로 한 페르세우스 동상을 조각했다. 페르세우스는 미네르바 여신의 도움으로 메두사의 머리를 휘두르는 모습을 보입니다. 카노바의 스튜디오에 동상이 전시되었을 때 벨베데레의 아폴로가 있는 자리에 두기 위해 교황 비오 7세가 매입하였다가 나중에 나폴레옹에 의해 잠정적으로 프랑스로 이전되게 되었습니다. 얼마 안 있어 폴란드 백작 부인 발레리아 타르나우스카가 의뢰한 이 메트로폴리탄 박물관의 버전은 여러 다른 종류와 함께 조각되었습니다. 카노바의 페르세우스는 매끈한 웅장함을 통해 신고전주의의 영웅적 미의 모델이 되었습니다.
