The signature "IOAN.BX", which identifies the fourth state, is that of Giovanni Antonio da Brescia (Venice, 1506-1507), who came into posession of Montagna's plate and reissued the engraving under his own name.The first state is a rather faithful copy in reverse of Bartolomeo Montagna's Virgin Adoring the Child (ca. 1500-1505), now in the Clark Institute at Williamstown. Later states are dramatically reworked.
