Wilton album, folio 54a: The Virgin and Child with Saint Joseph in the Background

1590–1613
Not on view
On folio 54 with two other prints: 27.78.1(183-184)
For more information on the Wilton album see entry for 27.78.1(1-428)
Bartsch believed this etching to be a copy by Salimbeni of Guido Reni's print of the same subject (B. XVIII.278.1), though Ciampolini rightly argues that Reni copied this precedent by Salimbeni.
This impression is a counterproof, presumably taken to adjust the inscription mistakenly printed in reverse in the etching (for which see 27.78.1(183) ). Another counterproof of this print is in the British Museum (2006,U.368)
