Page of book containing 185 leaves with a collection of lithographs, aquatints, engravings, and other media, with ornamental designs published by Fleury Chavant in Paris, part of the publication "Guide du Dessinateur de l'industrie: une macédoine de dessins variés , tels que fleurs, ornemens, etc. ... Ouvrage destiné aux fabricants et dessinateurs de soieries... et Papiers Peints..." This plate contains two designs for shawls with paisley leaves and Indian motifs. The first design is made up of a palmette with scrolling paisley leaves decorated with small, semi-abstract flowers and leaves, standing on a scallop-edged triangle, colored with black and decorated with thin, white scrolling branches with leaves and semi-abstract flowers, and surrounded by undulating branches with scrolling leaves and semi-abstract flowers. The second design is made up of a vertical strip of scrolling paisley leaves, colored with black and with undulating branches with exotic flowers and scrolling leaves, framed with semi-abstract scales, separated by thin, undulating branches with semi-abstract flowers and leaves; a vertical, undulating garland with offsetting, scrolling leaves with stylized, exotic flowers, framed by two thin, vertical, black stripes with small, abstract patches; and a strip of alternating semi-abstract fleurs de lis, colored with black and with thin, undulating branches with semi-abstract leaves and a flower, and thin, undulating garlands with semi-abstract flowers and leaves, outlined with black. The design is executed with black ink on thin, light brown paper. The motifs in the design seem to have been inspired on Indian calicoes and were most likely intended for printed textiles or wallpapers, and were possibly manufactured with vivid colors.
