Design for a Neo-Gothic Building, probably a Library in New York City

Alexander Jackson Davis American

Not on view

Design for the facade of a neo-gothic building, located in an urban setting. The books incorporated in the decoration of the facade may indicate that it was meant for a library. The drawing relates closely to another design in the collection (49.102.9), which is inscribed 'Biblioteca' below. The drawing was previously identified as part of Davis' plans for the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, but the setting of the building in a city street seems to negate this identification. Davis used a similar presentation device for several buildings he proposed for New York City, including the Astor Library (24.66.419) and the American Institute (24.66.438) and this drawing certainly dates from the same period.
