메트로폴리탄 박물관의 남아시아 소장품 중최대 규모인 이 기념비적 조각상은 판디아 왕조의 귀한 유물입니다. 판디아 왕조는 팔라바 왕조와 더불어 남인도에서 대규모의 사원건축을 개시하였습니다. 비슈누 신은 요가의 라리타사나에서 유래하였습니다. 힌두교에서 비슈누 신의 역할은 인간 세계의 질서를 회복하고 삼라만상의 안정을 위협하는 악과 싸우는 것입니다. 제작 당시 이 상의 상부 왼손은 나각(전투 나팔로 사용됨)을, 상부 오른손은 전쟁 원반을 들고 있었으며, 하부 오른손은 시무외인(아바야무드라) 수인을 하고 있었습니다.
