소크라테스의 죽음
신들을 부인하고 젊은이들을 타락시킨다고 아테네 정부에 의해 정죄를 받았던 소크라테스는 자신의 신념을 버리든지 아니면 독약을 마시고 죽어버리라는 강요를 받았습니다. 다비드는 슬픔에 잠긴 제자들에게 영혼의 영원함에 대해 차분히 강연하는 그를 보여줍니다. 이 그림은 플라톤의 파이돈에 살짝 토대를 둔 금욕을 주제로 하면서, 아마 다비드의 가장 완벽한 신고전주의적 표현일 것입니다. 판화 제작자이자 출판업자인 존 보이델은 조슈아 레이놀즈에게 보내는 서신에 “시스티나 예배당과 라파엘로의 스탄체 이후로 가장 위대한 미술 작업이다… 페리클레스 시대였다면 아테네에 경의를 표하는 작품이었을 것이다”라고 적었습니다.
