Malvasia thought the etching was based on an antique low relief, though according to Bohn, Passerotti may have followed a lost drawing by Taddeo Zuccaro. A very similar drawn composition by Zuccaro exists in the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris (inv. no. EBA 349). Bartsch described the subject as a religious sacrifice, but while libations are being poured it not clear that an actual sacrifice is taking place
