Print with Grotesque Masks and Figures
After Arent van Bolten Netherlandish
Publisher Pierre Firens I Flemish
Not on view
This print is part of a series of at least 29 prints containing monstrous figures after designs by the Dutch artist Arendt van Bolten. They were almost certainly published in Paris, however, by Pierre I Firens who may also have been the engraver for the series. This print contains three groups of grotesque figures. On the left and right side, a grotesque mask or head is depicted on top of which are placed fantastical creatures playing musical instruments. At center is a duo consisting of a male and female figure, both with pointy ears. The male figure also has two horns on his head. The figures in the print derive from drawings in album now kept at the British Museum in London. From left to right they relate to drawings no.146, no.205, and no.141.
