Print with Two Grotesque Figures
This print is part of a series of at least 29 prints containing monstrous figures after designs by the Dutch artist Arendt van Bolten. They were almost certainly published in Paris, however, by Pierre I Firens who may also have been the engraver for the series. This print contains two grotesque figures, both facing left. The figure on the left side is a quadruped with a row of horns on his head. He is being ridden by a human figure carrying a large shield. Behind this group, on the right side of the print is a fantastical figure leaning on a spear. he carries a bag on his back on top of which a rooster is seated. Most of the figures in this print series derive from drawings in an album now kept at the British Museum in London. The figure on the right relates to drawing no.149.
