Print with Two Grotesque Figures ridden by Monkeys
After Arent van Bolten Netherlandish
Not on view
This print is part of a series of at least 29 prints containing monstrous figures after designs by the Dutch artist Arendt van Bolten. They were almost certainly published in Paris, however, by Pierre I Firens who may also have been the engraver for the series. This copy of the print appears to be from a later edition of the print based on the changes that were made to the plate. Initially the print showed only the two grotesque figures, which derive from drawings by Van Bolten in an album now kept at the British Museum in London. They relate to drawings no.151 and no.152. Later, though still in the 17th century, someone added the two monkeys, who each ride on the back of one of the monsters.
